The President Says . . .

Friendships - a big word in Ski Club.   When we have members in need that is when we realize what an exceptional group of individuals we have in our club.   I have experienced this recently with some overwhelming projects, and 18 individuals heeded my call for help.   I am truly humbled by the sense of community our club displays.  It is this sense of family that inspires me to put all my energy into the club.   Thanks for being my friends.

And we also know how to have fun!   We recently had our Boone River Dinner Train ride-and it was reported to be a one-of-a-kind experience.   We will be having bowling, a hockey game, and of course, ski trips, as well as our member meetings.   So stay tuned and make sure you make the member meetings-you don’t want to miss out!

East Iowa Ski Club is now on Facebook!    Of course, we also have the old fashioned Social Networking Site - Nothing Nights.   This is face-to-face, which always trumps a computer, but when you can’t make it; the computer is a good alternative.  All members are eligible to be a “friend” and be included in the Facebook social website.   You can keep up on what your fellow members are doing in their lives.   Go to www.facebook.com and create your own page.   Then “ask” to be a friend of the East Iowa Ski Club.

Hope to see you all soon!    Kim Robu   President

Co-Chairs: Brenda Garbe and Sandra Cummings

Cost: $235 per person

First down payment is $117 due at the September meeting

Second down payment is $118 due at the November meeting

Cancellation date is December 19th

Currently we have sixteen individuals signed to travel with us to Red Wing Minnesota, the plan is to leave Friday night via bus. The travel time is only about 4 hours, barely time to have a snack and beverage. Our hotel “The St. James” has a lovely pub; “Jimmy’s” the perfect way to top off the day.

Folks that aren’t inclined to ski at Welch or cross country on the Cannon Valley Trail have several options.

·                     Experience historic Red Wing aboard our own bus with a local tour guide for a nominal $3 fee.

·                     Try your luck at the Treasure Island Resort and Casino; besides the lavish buffet they have, there is cosmic bowling on the weekends. www.treasureislandcasino.com

·                     Unique shopping experiences in the “St. James Hotel” courtyard, across the street at the “Uffda Shop” or “Ruth’s German Haus” are just a few of the spots to explore.

The Uffda Shop opened in 1977 in the beautiful river town of Red Wing, Minnesota.  Located in the heart of downtown, across from the St. James Hotel, the Uffda Shop is a delightful destination, providing unique Scandinavian gifts for all occasions.

·                    Red Wing’s restaurants, bars and pubs offer diners a wide variety of dining choices to fit any appetite or budget. A little more information will be coming on that before departure.

Cost: $235.00 per person, double room, including lodging, transportation, Saturday night wine and cheese, taxes and tip. Lift tickets are extra, group rates usually range in the $40 area, to be collected the weekend of the trip. Modest fee for cross country skiing.

I’m pleased to announce that two more people have signed on for Steamboat 1020 bringing the total to 26. We have 2 tickets left to fly if you are interested, but condo rooms may be a problem. If you want to go, signup will be contingent on lodging. We will expand until airfare runs out, or we can’t book more rooms. Critical dates are approaching. Airline tickets must be assigned or turned back on November 12,
2009. So, full payment ($1056) will have to be received by November 10th, so I have time to secure

confirmation on lodging. If it snowed12” tonight, you will get all enthused, so why dilly dally around? You

know it will snow before too long. Steamboat wants you! Dale and Dick want you!

I’m planning on having a get together on Saturday, the 19th before the December meeting to pass out itineraries and make final plans. Bring your skis and boots if you want me to haul them to Colorado for you.

Boone Dinner Train -
Saturday Oct.24th

All aboard!  16 travelers boarded the Boone and Scenic Valley Railroad on Saturday October 24 for an excursion through the picturesque Des Moines River Valley.  There was a moment of panic before leaving the station when the engineer had George Van Cura climb up into the engineer’s seat.  Would George be operating the train?  A sigh of relief fell over the crowd when they realized it was just a photo opportunity.  After leaving the station, we traveled west 13.68 miles to the historic mining town of Fraser (pop 117) which is the turn around point for the train.  Our first point of interest was when the steam engine 2-8-2 (made in China) passed by us snorting and blowing black smoke.  It was quite a sight to see.  Along the way, we crossed Bass Point Creek via a 156 foot tall and 784 foot long, steel railroad structure.  Those without a fear of heights stood on the observation deck at the rear of the dining car for a breathtaking view.  You had to wonder how the train could stay on such a narrow track so high in the air!  Along the route, a delicious dinner was served in dining cars from the 1950’s.  The dining cars were formerly used on the City of Los Angeles and the City of San Francisco lines.  Dinner was capped off with a surprise birthday cake and rousing round of “Happy Birthday” sung for Sandra Cummings.  After a fabulous 2 ½ hour trip back in time, we returned to the Boone station.  A special thanks to Sally Williams for planning this fun event and coming to the station to wish us a Bon Voyage!  -Rosanne
